You know, every now and again I get reminded just how fantastic the CELTA course really is.
A friend of mine recently became a CELTA trainer- she’s working on one of the fully online versions- and she messaged me last week absolutely blown away by the progress her trainees were making. And honestly? I wasn’t surprised.
Hi, I’m Jo Gakonga and I run ELT-Training.com, where I support English language teachers at all stages of their careers. I’ve been a CELTA trainer and assessor for over 25 years and today, I want to take a few minutes to tell you why CELTA is still one of the best teaching qualifications you can get - and why I recommend it, again and again.
The Structure & Intensity
First off CELTA is brilliantly structured. Yes, it’s intense. Whether you do it over four weeks or part-time, it’s a big commitment. But in that short space of time you learn a huge amount - and more importantly, you apply it straight away. This isn’t just theory. You’re in the classroom from day one, teaching real learners.
Practical Classroom Experience
In fact that’s the thing I love most about it and what employers value. CELTA prepares you for real teaching. You’re not just reading about classroom management. You’re actually managing a classroom. You’re standing up, giving instructions, timing tasks and learning what works when it’s just you and a whiteboard.
This can be nerve-wracking of course. But it’s also incredibly effective. You improve rapidly because you’re constantly applying what you’ve learned.
Outstanding Individual Support
The other thing that really sets CELTA apart is the support. After every lesson you teach, you get detailed feedback: both spoken, in a group and written just for you. It’s focused, constructive and genuinely helps you improve.
And you’re not learning in isolation. You’ll learn so much by watching your peers, seeing what they did well (and what doesn’t work so well), hearing their feedback, reflecting on what you’d do differently. That kind of peer learning is invaluable and it’s baked into the course structure.
Focus on Reflection
Another reason? After every lesson you teach you’ll write a reflection and that process of pausing, thinking, asking “What went well?” and “What could I do better next time?”, that’s also gold. It helps to build a habit of reflective practice that stays with you long after the course is over.
Trainer Quality & Standards
Another thing that’s great? The people training you! Every CELTA trainer is fully qualified AND has been through a rigorous training programme themselves and we’re all regularly standardised to make sure the feedback we give is consistent and high quality.
On top of that, every course is externally assessed. That means a senior tutor from another centre checks everything has been run properly and standards are being met.
International Recognition
ANOTHER huge plus? CELTA is recognised all over the world. Whether you want to teach in Spain, Vietnam, Argentina or from your kitchen table with a decent internet connection. It’s a qualification that opens doors because employers trust it.
Confidence & Community
Finally. Yes, t’s challenging. But it’s also empowering. The growth you see in just a few weeks is incredible. By the end of the course, you’re planning solid lessons, managing a class and using techniques you’d never heard of at the start.
And you often come out of it with new friends and a support network: people who’ve been on the same journey and get it.
So, no, it’s not easy. But if you’re serious about teaching English and you want something that’s practical, professional and respected worldwide, CELTA is the key.
If you found this helpful, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and maybe even share it with someone else who’s on the fence about taking CELTA and check out my website for lots more resources.
