It’s difficult to define what makes teaching great, but I’ve been a CELTA tutor and assessor for 25 years and there are three important things I’ve noticed that Pass A candidates always do. Want to know what they are? Keep watching.
If this is the first time we’re meeting, I’m Jo Gakonga, and I’ve got a website at ELT-Training.com where I make video based support material for English language teachers at all stages of their careers. Check it out and if you like this, give it a thumbs up and subscribe, I make a new video every week.
Number 1 - Plan
The first thing that’s noticeable about Pass A candidates – and is one of the criteria for that grade is planning. Higher grade candidates plan effectively and thoroughly. They have well thought through aims and logical stage plans. You often find them selecting their own materials later in the course and they don’t need too much support.
Listen up, though- it’s REALLY OK to get support with your planning- that’s what your tutors are there for and they want to help you. You shouldn’t shy away from this, especially in the first stages of the course.
Candidates can plan effectively with minimal guidance. They can select appropriate resources and tasks for successful language and language skills development.
Number 2 -Know the language they’re teaching
Another aspect that singles out exceptional candidates is that they KNOW the language they’re teaching. That’s grammar, vocabulary and functional language. They’re able to analyse it thoroughly in their plans and they teach it effectively in their lessons. If you’re feeling that this might be a weak area for you, my Grammar for Language teachers course has helped thousands of trainees get to grips with it.
They can analyse target language thoroughly.
Number 3 - Teach the learners, not the plan
In the classroom, trainees who get the highest grade in CELTA are AWARE of their learners. If someone is struggling, they notice and they’re able to help. If the class understand something quickly, they move on and they definitely make sure that learners get plenty of practice.
Candidates show very good awareness of learners and can respond so that learners benefit from the lessons.
No one can guarantee you a Pass A on the course but if you want to hit the ground running and make sure you achieve the best result for YOU, check out my Complete CELTA Package and other free material on my site. See you there!
