How to Help Your Quiet Learners Shine
Video Transcript
Do you have learners who stay quiet even when they know the answer? Let’s fix that.
I’m Jo Gakonga from ELT-Training and in this video we’ll talk about how knowing your learners can make them feel more confident and how that changes everything.
Step 1: Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
When learners see that you notice their small wins- whether it’s using a new word or asking a question- they’ll feel seen and encouraged. So cheer them on!
Step 2: Give Choices and Control
Some learners feel more confident when they have control. Offer them choices of activity or ask whether they want to hear a recording again or work alone or in pairs.
Step 3: Personalize Feedback
Generic praise like ‘good job’ doesn’t cut it. How about : "I noticed how clearly you explained your opinion in that discussion"... and give feedback on the content of what they said, not just the accuracy of their language. It shows you’re paying attention to them as individuals and it’ll make a big difference.
What’s one thing you do to boost your learners’ confidence?
