What if I told you that five simple questions could totally transform the way you teach?

Hi, I’m Jo Gakonga from ELT-Training and today we’re diving into five powerful questions you should ask your learners to really understand them... and why it matters.

Question 1: Why are you learning English
Knowing their motivation helps you make lessons more relevant. Are they learning for work? Travel? Exams? Tailor your content to those goals.

Question 2: How do you like to learn?
Some learners love group work, others prefer working alone. Some want to speak, others need time to process first. Asking shows you care and helps you adapt your methods.

Question 3: What do you find most difficult?
This is gold! Whether it’s speaking fluency or listening comprehension, you’ll know where to focus your support.

Question 4: What are you interested in?
If they love football, movies, or food, you can create lessons around those topics. Interest boosts motivation, every time.

Question 5: How do you feel about making mistakes?
Understanding their attitude to errors helps you build a safe environment. Some students are really nervous about making mistakes. Your role is to make them see mistakes as learning opportunities.

Which of these questions do you already ask? Or do you have another go-to question? I’d love to hear!
